Instagram and Facebook, and nothing else. Each one is handled on its own terms, because anything built to work everywhere at once breaks the week either of them changes something.
The buttons appear right next to the ones Instagram already gives you. No second window, no pasting links anywhere.
Ads in your feed get no buttons. That one is on purpose.
Facebook moves its buttons around constantly, so the profile picture sits in the right-click menu instead, where it stays put.
Photo album downloads went away in 2.0.0, after Facebook shut down the old page they relied on.

None of this is offered to you normally. Most of the work is in keeping it working as the apps change underneath.

Not the small version the page shows you. It tries several ways of getting the original, so a locked-down or business account still gives up the best picture available, and it tells you when there is nothing better to be had rather than quietly handing you a thumbnail.

You get the story you are actually looking at, not the one you opened the viewer on. Highlights never say which highlight they are, so it works that out from the tray and the timestamps before saving anything.

Two buttons on every post: save the photo or video you are looking at, or take the whole carousel in one go. They show up on a post's own page and on every post as you scroll the feed.

One button walks the entire profile and packs every post into a single zip named after the account. Anything it cannot reach is skipped and counted at the end, instead of ending the run.

Stops the extension from telling Instagram or Facebook that you watched, on both of the ways they ask.
Best effort, and off unless you turn it on. A view can still slip through somewhere the extension cannot see, so treat it as fewer, not never.

A bar across the top counts the files as they land, and a small message tells you what saved and what did not. Nothing pops out of the browser at you.

Under the hood
Saving a lot at once is mostly about not getting blocked. These are the settings that let a 400-post profile finish in one go.
Manifest V3, so it keeps working as Chrome tightens the rules.
Turn it down if Instagram starts pushing back on a big archive.
Each retry waits longer. Refusals that will not change are not retried.
Deliberately small. Grabbing more at once is what gets you throttled.
Photos and videos are already compressed, so squashing them again only costs you time.
Checked twice, so nothing odd in a caption can end up in a filename.

Files go straight from the app to your computer. Your settings stay in your browser.
There is no account and no login. SocialStalker records anonymous usage analytics against a generated install ID, and reports errors, so whatever breaks when Instagram or Facebook change something can be found and fixed. The privacy policy lists exactly what is sent and where it goes.

Yes. No paid tier, no licence key, no quota, no trial. The source is public and MIT licensed.
Only ones you can already see. The extension works as you, in your browser, signed in as you already are. It unlocks better versions of things you can see, not access to things you cannot: if a profile is private and you do not follow it, there is nothing to get.
Saving a post, a reel or a profile picture leaves no trace with them. Stories are different, because the app reports back that you watched. The setting for that cuts down what gets reported, but it is off by default and it is not a guarantee.
Chrome, and the browsers built on it: Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, Vivaldi. There is no Firefox or Safari version.
Saving files needs permission to download. Loading pictures and videos as you needs the sign-in your browser already has, otherwise everything comes back blocked. Adding the buttons needs permission to change the page. The rest is your settings. It only has access to Instagram and Facebook, plus the two addresses it uses to look up a Facebook profile and to report problems.

Instagram and Facebook change how their pages are built without warning, so a button sometimes disappears or a download starts failing. Being throttled looks much the same from the outside, so turn down the number of downloads at once first. Anything else, tell me on GitHub.
